Molecules, a chemistry game

Intro – What is the app?

The game contains two options either ‘timed’ or ‘levels’. Interactive game creating simple bonds, once bonds are created they are removed from the screen and new atoms drop in from the top.

Timed option you are to make as many molecules as you can within a fixed time period. You make molecules by combining atoms interactively and a bond is made once all available electrons are occupied.

Levels option contains 20 levels where you are given a specific molecule to make (e.g. water on level 1) with a certain number of atoms given to complete the task. Difficulty increases along with level and they begin to become times with smaller amount of atoms in the interface.

Aim of the app is to connect atoms together to get molecules which it does and to aid the understanding of chemists. The app is not very clear on the atoms at hand and doesn’t show what molecules you are making, it is simply just dots being joined together. It overall runs smoothly and no problems arose, however interface is fairly simple and not much to it.

The app is 100% free, only 16.4 MB and requires iOS 7.0 or later. Compatible with iPhone, iPad and iPod touch, however is not available on android.

In comparison to mechanisms this game is a lot less in depth about the chemistry at hand and lacks any information about chemistry which mechanisms conveys very well. I’d say the app is missing information on chemistry as it is merely just a simple phone game, it lacks information on the bonding of molecules yet is advertised as a chemistry game.

I’d give the app a rating of 1/5 and there are no customer reviews.

The app overall cannot really be used as a learning tool. Although we connect atoms and the amount of bonds an atom (dot) can make matches that of available electrons, this is not explained and is very unclear to someone who doesn’t have an understanding of chemistry. Although the idea of the game is alright, it is literally just joining dots and cannot be used to teach anyone anything.
I hope you found this review useful and avoid downloading this unless you want a mildly chemistry related addictive game.
