Beaker

What is the app?

The app basically turns your phone into an interactive virtual beaker where you have 150 chemicals to experiment with. To start reactions, you can add in chemicals, heat up your ‘beaker’ and even shake your device in order to initiate. Once you have a reaction taking place the balanced reaction equations come up on the screen so you can learn how and what reacts.

This is an extremely useful and easy to use app. It can be used by chemistry students as well as your average joe in order to learn a little bit more about chemistry. My favourite reaction was caesium with water because as soon as the caesium touches the water it explodes out of your screen.

The app runs very well and although is its interface is all black you can add colours to your beaker in order to see what your reaction is. I found no problems with the app as it did not lag or shutdown.

The app itself is free and requires 73.4 MB. It is compatible with both android and apple products, requiring IOS 8.0 or later for the latter.

The app is a very good idea and seems to be one of a kind as I can’t find anything like it. I encountered no problems with the app and have nothing negative to say about it.

Its customer reviews on the app store is 3.1 though there hasn’t been a review in over a year and I imagine they have updated and optimised it since. I’d give the app a 5/5 as I think it is a really cool idea and I found no problems with it.

This app could aid chemists young and old, showing a wide range of chemicals and their reactivities towards one another saving some experimental work from the labs and you can use it on the go. As well as showing chemists chemicals they should definitely avoid mixing and chemicals that will have no point in mixing as they will have no reaction. Overall I am very impressed with this app and would highly recommend.

That’s all folks,
ARCS
