Khan Academy (Part 1)

The Khan Academy app provides very detailed educational resources for learning chemistry (as well as other STEM subjects). While the app does provide detailed information on almost all areas of chemistry from National 5 to Advanced Higher level it is organised by subject rather than level. This could make it harder for pupils to find the content that is relevant to them.

The introductory chemistry material covered in the app includes (but is not limited to) elements & atomic structure, formulae & equation balancing, redox reactions, acids & bases and alkanes. While all of this is relevant to the N5 course and while could prove useful to current N5 pupils, the difficulty & complexity of most of the material covered in the app is far beyond their level. It is therefore, recommended that N5 pupils look towards other educational apps (such as Pocket Notes) for revision material this is more appropriate for their level as this is less likely to could discourage them.

The more intermediate material covered in the app includes (but is not limited to) mass spec., quantum numbers & orbitals, hybridization, periodicity, electrochemistry, thermodynamics. All of which are relevant to either the Higher or Advanced Higher course however as there is a lot of overlap with these courses it may be difficult to determine which material provided by the app is relevant to which course however Advanced Higher pupils may find the Higher content useful as a refresher anyway.

One issue with the Khan Academy app is, while Higher & Advanced Higher pupils may find the material useful (as it is relevant to their course), much of it is delivered at such a fast pace that most Higher pupils would struggle to keep up with it. However, Advanced Higher should be able to cope reasonably well with the difficulty level.
