MoleculAR
The MoleculAR app allows students to visualise & examine 3D molecules using augmented reality.

The app features models of materials which the pupils “zoom into” to see the main molecule with in. From here they can rotate it and view it from different angles. The only slight issue here is the some of the molecule models take up the entire material model which makes it difficult to keep the entire molecule on screen without zooming outside the material. However, to deal with this molecule models can be viewed individually.

The app also offers a description about each molecule with some interesting trivia and which elements the material is composed of.

Atomic models are also available for viewing in this app. As these atomic models do not feature the shapes of 3D orbitals (instead representing the electron shells as orbits) it is suitable for a National 5 pupil, though Higher & Advanced Higher pupils should be using more detailed models on other apps (such as MoleculAR Viewer, not to be confused with this app of a similar name) .
The main chemistry material covered in the app is the shape of molecules. This could be useful to National 5 pupils when covering the “Bonding & Properties of Materials” topic as it means they do not need to solely rely on plastic modelling kits. It could also prove to be particularly useful to pupils (and teachers) who suffer from Aphantasia (which means they struggle to visualise 3D shapes).
Overall, it is a very satisfying and interactive app that makes learning fun.
